From Thumbnail Designer to Video Editor
Last year, when I failed as a thumbnail designer, I lost all of my clients.
I decided to shift my focus from thumbnail designing to video editing.
Within 14 days, I got my first client.
The next month, I became a full-time editor.
Since then, I’ve never looked back.
Here are 5 steps you can take to do the same:
1. Pick a tool
Picking your editing software is the first step in your editing journey.
But most people get it wrong. They pick the best software.
Instead of picking the software that fits THEM the best.
This small change can make a significant change in your journey.
You will learn fast, edit fast, and eventually grow fast.
2. Learn the basics
You need to get your basics clear.
You can’t compete with other editors if your fundamentals are weak.
Learn all the small things that you need to do while editing a video.
From cutting the video to exporting it.
The fastest way to learn it is to build a roadmap and stick to it.
3. Practice, Practice
You can’t learn everything from watching tutorials.
The real lessons are learned while actually editing.
You can learn the what and how from tutorials,
But to learn the why and when you need to edit.
So spend more time practicing than learning.
4. Build your portfolio
If you practice with enough videos,
You will have multiple videos to showcase on your portfolio.
It’s time to build your portfolio to get clients.
Set up a portfolio page and put all your videos.
Show that you can deliver great quality and results.
At the end, add a CTA to contact you or book a call.
To get clients, you need eyeballs.
There are only two ways to get eyeballs on your work:
First is Outreach — which I will not recommend to beginners, because you don’t know how to
Build an offer
Position your services
Find potential clients
And build trust when you haven’t edited any client videos.
The second way is Building a Personal Brand.
This is what I did, and it’s how I got all of my clients.
It takes less effort than constantly reaching out to people.
I just post content and let them come to me.
These clients will trust you more and are easier to close because they reached out to you.
